Advocacy . . .

Advocacy is the third objective in PFLAG's three-point mission.  PFLAG advocates for, promotes, and defends equal civil rights -- not so-called "special rights" -- for our LGBTQ relatives and friends.

Please visit the following websites to find the latest information about efforts underway to secure LGBTQ rights:

Human Rights Campaign (HRC)
HRC advocates on behalf of LGBTQ Americans, mobilizes grassroots actions in diverse communities, invests strategically to elect fair-minded individuals to office and educates the public about LGBTQ issues.  As the largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for LGBTQ, HRC represents over one million members and supporters nationwide — all committed to making HRC’s vision a reality.

PFLAG National
The national PFLAG organization advocates for LGBT equality through civil rights legislation and legal protections. You can learn more about the issues facing our families by clicking here. That will give you some background information on these issues, why and how they impact our families, and what the national PFLAG organization is doing to address these policy issues.

PFLAG Phoenix
This website lists simple things you can do now to begin advocating in your community on behalf of our LGBTQ loved ones.  When it comes to advocacy, we all need to get involved.

Here in Flagstaff, PFLAG is involved with the following local advocacy efforts:

  • working with local gay/straight alliances (GSAs) in the high schools.

  • meeting regularly with the Northern Arizona University (NAU) LGBTQ Task Force to support students, staff and faculty;  this group now has an LGBT Resource and Support Office with a Program Coordinator.

  • advocating for broadening and changing the policy against bullying in the Flagstaff Unified School District.

  • encouraging the Flagstaff City Council to expand the current city policy on inclusion.
